Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is one of my favorite spots in San Diego, hands down. I’ve been a handful of times to this gorgeous spot to shoot small weddings, elopements, and adventure sessions, and every time I come back, I’m more excited than the time before. Sunset Cliffs is located right on the coast of San Diego, and it’s a really popular spot for surfers, yoga enthusiasts, and cliff divers, so when Lexi and Daniel reached out to me about their wedding vision, I couldn’t be more excited to go back.
After going back and forth and brainstorming elopement locations in California, Idaho, and Oregon, Lexi and Daniel decided to stay within California, the place they’ve called home for the last 10 years. Originally from Chicago, these two coincidentally moved to San Diego around the same time and met each other while going to school.
In love with wake boarding on beaches near Sunset Cliffs, these two knew they wanted something on or near a beach with just the two of them in order to have a “just us” experience on their wedding day. After thinking through a list of locations in California, they realized that a Sunset Cliffs wedding would be the perfect spot for them, as this is the spot they got engaged at. With Sunset Cliffs stretching over 3 miles long, I knew that I could find their perfect “I do” spot.
Something that’s a little challenging about Sunset Cliffs is finding a secluded spot. Even though it’s a large area, it’s very crowded. If you don’t know, Sunset Cliffs is one of the most popular spots in San Diego, and thousands of people travel to see this area of California each year. With many hikes and the natural beauty, it’s no wonder this area is so popular. We automatically ruled out a weekend wedding, and a sunset wedding, as this is also a very popular spot for those who love watching San Diego’s colorful sunsets, hence the name.
In order to beat the crowds, we woke up super early and decided to have a sunrise wedding at around 5 in the morning. We met up, Lexi changed into her beautiful dress from Lulus, and we made our way to Sunset Cliffs, with nobody there but us and the early morning surfers off into the distance.
We ended up shooting near Luscomb’s Point, an area of Sunset Cliffs named after Happy Luscomb, a dedicated surfer who lives near the area.
It was absolutely amazing to be able to capture Lexi and Daniel exchanging their vows in complete intimacy, hearing nothing but the waves crashing on the bottom of Sunset Cliffs and the occasional laugh. We saw the sun coming up over the horizon and fading into the clouds, seagulls flying around the shore, and surfers catching those first waves of the day. There’s nothing better than a wedding with a only few guests (the surfers), and Mother Nature as witnesses when starting the beginning of forever with your partner, and I’m so honored to be chosen as the one who captured Lexi and Daniel’s perfect wedding day in San Diego.
