Mendocino Elopement Guide: How and Where to Elope in 2026

Mendocino is easily one of my favorite places to elope in Northern California. Between the redwoods, wildflower-covered bluffs, beaches, waterfalls, and ridiculously charming downtown, there’s a pretty good chance this will become one of your favorite places you’ve ever visited.

As a Northern California elopement photographer, I’ve spent years exploring Mendocino and photographing couples along its coast. And while Mendocino Headlands gets most of the attention, some of my favorite ceremony locations are actually the parks, trails, and redwood groves outside of town.

In this Mendocino elopement guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to plan your day, including my favorite places to elope, the best time of year to visit, permits, marriage licenses, where to stay, things to do, and sample timelines.

5 Best Places to Elope in Mendocino

Mendocino has the perfect mix of ocean cliffs, redwoods, and hiking trails, making it one of the most versatile places to elope in California. Whether you’re dreaming of saying your vows beside the ocean, beneath the trees, or somewhere in between, there’s no shortage of amazing locations to choose from. These are the five best and my most recommended locations for elopements.

1. Mendocino Headlands State Park

If you want the classic Mendocino experience, Mendocino Headlands State Park can’t be beat. This is easily one of the most popular places to elope in Mendocino, and for good reason. You get jagged cliffs, hidden beaches, wildflowers, and some of the best ocean views in the area, all within walking distance of downtown.

What really makes the Headlands stand out is how accessible it is compared to other coastal elopement locations. Many of the best viewpoints require little to no hiking, which makes this one of my favorite options for couples bringing friends or family. If you have parents, grandparents, or guests who can’t comfortably hike, there are beautiful ceremony spots just a short walk from the parking lot.

The tradeoff is that you shouldn’t expect complete privacy here, especially during summer and on weekends. If having the cliffs mostly to yourselves is important, I’d recommend a weekday ceremony and planning around sunrise or sunset.

• Scenery: Ocean cliffs, beaches, wildflowers, and coastal trails
• Hiking required: No. Most viewpoints are a short walk from parking.
• Crowds: Moderate to high, especially during summer
• Best time to elope: Spring and fall

Best for couples who: Want classic Mendocino coastal views, don’t want to hike, are bringing guests, and don’t mind seeing other people during their elopement.

2. Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve

If you have your heart set on getting married in the redwoods, Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve is one of my favorite options near Mendocino. It’s about an hour inland from the coast, which means it requires a little more driving, but that distance comes with a huge perk: far fewer crowds.

There is some hiking required to reach the heart of the grove, with the main loop coming in at around 2 miles roundtrip, but the walk is well worth it. Here, you’ll find old-growth redwoods, picnic areas, and a small seasonal creek.

Montgomery Woods is especially great if privacy is one of your biggest priorities. It doesn’t get anywhere near the foot traffic of California’s more famous redwood parks, making it much easier to find a quiet spot to exchange vows.

• Scenery: Old-growth redwoods, forest, ferns, and a seasonal creek
• Hiking required: Yes. Plan on around 2 miles roundtrip to explore the heart of the grove.
• Crowds: Very low
• Best time to elope: Spring through fall

Best for couples who: Want redwoods, prioritize privacy, don’t mind a little hiking and extra driving, and want to combine the forest and ocean on the same day.

3. Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park

You can’t talk about Mendocino without mentioning Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park. Between the historic lighthouse, coastal trails, and wide-open views of the Pacific, this is a location that feels distinctly Mendocino.

I particularly love Point Cabrillo for couples who want cliffside ocean views without the crowds you’ll typically find at Mendocino Headlands. There are plenty of trails and overlooks to explore, so it’s much easier to find a quieter spot for vows or portraits without sacrificing on the pretty backdrop.

And perhaps most importantly, Point Cabrillo is dog-friendly. Do with that information what you will. (Please bring your dog.)

• Scenery: Ocean cliffs, coastal trails, open fields, and a historic lighthouse
• Hiking required: Minimal. Expect some walking to reach the lighthouse and coastal viewpoints.
• Crowds: Low to moderate
• Best time to elope: Spring through fall

Best for couples who: Want coastal views with fewer crowds than Mendocino Headlands, love the look of the lighthouse, don’t want a strenuous hike, and absolutely refuse to leave their dog at home.

4. Russian Gulch State Park

If you can’t decide between the forest and the coast, Russian Gulch State Park will give you a little bit of everything. This is one of my favorite Mendocino elopement locations for couples who want a variety of different landscapes without spending half their wedding day driving between locations.

The park has fern-covered forest trails, waterfalls, wildflowers in the spring, and of course, ocean views, all just a few minutes from downtown Mendocino.

The biggest downside is that Russian Gulch can get busy, especially during summer and on weekends. If privacy is important to you, I’d recommend eloping on a weekday and exploring some of the quieter trails rather than sticking to the most popular areas.

• Scenery: Redwoods, ferns, waterfalls, wildflowers, beaches, and ocean cliffs
• Hiking required: Depends on the location. Coastal areas are easily accessible, while the waterfalls require more hiking.
• Crowds: Moderate
• Best time to elope: Spring through fall

Best for couples who: Can’t choose between the forest and coast, want a variety of scenery in one location, are open to some hiking, and don’t mind planning around crowds.

5. Navarro Point Preserve and Coastal Trail

If you love the scenery at Mendocino Headlands but want something a little quieter, Navarro Point Preserve and Coastal Trail is one of my favorite alternatives. This is a bit of a hidden gem compared to some of the better-known spots around Mendocino, and it’s one of my personal favorite trails in the area.

What I love most about Navarro Point is how open and secluded it feels. The trail follows the coastline with wide-open ocean views, grassy bluffs, and some incredible wildflower meadows during the spring. There’s plenty of room to explore, so it makes it much easier to find a spot away from other visitors.

If having a private ceremony is high on your priority list, this would be one of my first recommendations in Mendocino. You can get the cliffside scenery the area is known for without dealing with the same crowds you’ll often find closer to town.

• Scenery: Ocean cliffs, coastal trails, grassy bluffs, and wildflowers
• Hiking required: Minimal, though you’ll want to walk farther along the trail for more privacy
• Crowds: Very low
• Best time to elope: Spring through fall

Best for couples who: Prioritize privacy, want classic Mendocino coastal scenery, don’t mind a little walking, and love the look of Mendocino Headlands but not the crowds.

Best Time of Year to Elope in Mendocino

Mendocino is one of the rare places in Northern California where you can comfortably elope year-round. However, I think March through May is the best time to elope in Mendocino if you want to experience the coast at its prettiest. Spring brings green landscapes, flowing waterfalls, wildflowers along the bluffs, and fewer crowds than you’ll find during summer.

That said, every season has its perks. Here’s what you can expect throughout the year.

Spring (March-May)

If I had to choose one season, spring would be my pick for the best overall scenery. The winter rain turns everything bright green, waterfalls are flowing, and wildflowers begin covering the bluffs. Earlier in the season, you may even catch gray whales migrating along the coast.

Rain is still possible, particularly in March and April, but conditions generally become drier as you get closer to summer.

Pros:
• Very few crowds
• Peak greenery and waterfalls
• Wildflowers and whale watching

Cons:
• Chance of rain

Summer (June-August)

If long days and a lower chance of rain are your priorities, summer is a great time to elope in Mendocino. You’ll have plenty of daylight to explore multiple locations, hiking trails are generally drier, and longer evenings give you more flexibility when building your timeline.

The downside is that this is also one of the busiest times of year in Mendocino. Popular locations like Mendocino Headlands can get crowded, and lodging tends to be more expensive. If you’re planning a summer elopement, I’d recommend choosing a weekday and considering one of the lesser known ceremony locations on this list.

• More businesses and activities available

Cons:
• Crowds
• Lodging is pricier

Fall (September-October)

Fall is one of my favorite times to elope in Mendocino if you want a balance of good weather and fewer people. Summer crowds begin to disappear, but you can still take advantage of relatively long days and comfortable temperatures.

It’s also a great season if you want to incorporate more of Mendocino County into your trip. You can spend your wedding day exploring the coast, then head inland for wine tasting or other activities before or after your elopement.

If wildflowers and waterfalls aren’t a priority, September and October would be some of the first months I’d consider.

Pros:
• No crowds
• Nice weather
• Fall colors

Cons:
• Very small chance of rain or fog

Winter (November-February)

Winter is probably the most underrated time to elope in Mendocino. You’ll find fewer tourists, lower travel costs, and a much quieter version of the coast than you’d experience during peak summer.

It’s also an incredible season for wildlife. Winter falls within the gray whale migration season, so you may be able to spot whales directly from the bluffs or book a whale-watching tour while you’re in town.

The biggest consideration is rain. If you’re planning a winter elopement, build some flexibility into your timeline and have a backup plan, especially if your ceremony will be completely outdoors.

Pros:
• No crowds
• Whale watching
• Low cost of travel

Cons:
• Chance of rain

Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Mendocino?

Most likely, yes. Many of the locations on this list are located within California State Parks or other protected public lands, which means you’ll typically need permission to hold your ceremony there.

For example, weddings at Mendocino Headlands State Park require coordinating with California State Parks, which has a Special Event Coordinator specifically for the Mendocino area. Other locations may have different requirements depending on who manages the property, your guest count, and what you’re planning to bring with you.

Permit costs and application timelines vary by location, so I recommend figuring out where you want to elope before diving too far into the permit process. Usually, permits in the area range from $200-$400. Once you’ve chosen your ceremony spot, go directly to the managing agency’s website or contact their permit coordinator for the most current requirements.

How to Get a Marriage License in Mendocino

You can get a marriage license in any county in California. You just have to go in-person to get one. If you’re hoping to get a marriage license in Mendocino specifically, here’s what you need to do:

1. Call the County Clerk’s office at (707)-234-6822 to schedule a marriage license appointment. Walk-ins are welcome.
2. Either wait for your appointment to do it in person or fill out the marriage license application ahead of time.
3. Show up together, both with IDs and $95 for the license.
4. After you’ve paid, you’ll get your license.

Do I Need an Officiant and Witness to Elope in Mendocino?

Yes, you will need at least one witness and an officiant to elope in Mendocino.

Pro tip: I’m ordained and officiate ceremonies for free for my couples! Friends and family members can also become ordained to officiate ceremonies for free online.

Where to Stay

One of the best parts about eloping in Mendocino is the lodging. Between cozy cabins in the redwoods, oceanfront cottages, and boutique hotels within walking distance of downtown, there are tons of incredible places to stay depending on the kind of experience you’re looking for.

When choosing your lodging, I recommend thinking beyond where you’re going to sleep. Your Airbnb or hotel will likely be where you get ready, exchange gifts or letters, and spend part of your wedding morning, so choose somewhere you wouldn’t mind having in your photos.

Airbnbs

• Handcrafted Hideaway – A small and romantic cabin tucked deep in the woods of Mendocino.
• Stunning A-Frame Cabin – An a-frame cabin surrounded by redwoods with a hot tub and cozy interior.
• Water Tower Retreat – A tiny home in the redwoods with hammocks and minimalistic design.
• Yellow Oceanfront Getaway – Oceanfront cottage on the bluff-top with private tide pools and a wrap around deck.

Photographer tip: Look for rentals with large windows and plenty of natural light. A beautiful cabin is great, but a dark cabin with tiny windows can make getting-ready photos much more difficult.

Hotels

• Nicholson House – A 5-star hotel near the headlands originally built in the 1800s.
• Brewery Gulch Inn – An eco-salvaged Redwood hotel with a lean and contemporary arts and crafts style. They also offer elopement packages!
• Sea Rock Inn – A charming cottage-style hotel with stunning ocean views.
• Heritage House Resort and Spa – A luxurious and romantic 37-acre sanctuary along the coast.
• Mendocino Hotel – A charming boutique hotel right along the beach.
